Our Beginnings...

The Millington Baptist Church was formed by members of the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church seeking to start a sister church across the river. During the fall of 1850 and the spring

of 1851 the church at Mr. Bethel, under the pastoral care of Rev. E. C. Ambler, was blessed with the most extensive revival ever know in this section. A portion of the members of the Mt. Bethel Church met at Pleasant Valley School on May 2, 1851. At that time it was decided to organize a new church.

On May 4, the Mt. Bethel Church gave a letter of dismissal to 80 of its members to form the new church.

The new church began to work on plans to erect a house of worship. Lots were cast for the building site. Rev. E. C. Ambler was called to draw the fifth and deciding lot. The site at the "junction of the New Road" was drawn. After the site was decided, they set aside a day of fasting, humility, and prayer for guidance and aid in the erection of a house for this purpose.

The new congregation held meetings in the Pleasant Valley School until September 29, 1852, when the Meeting House was formally opened and dedicated. The total cost was $2,518.76, and the last payment was made in early June 1855.

The original Meeting House is now our gymnasium. The first addition was a lecture room in 1892. It was torn down in 1959 to give way for a Sunday School Assembly Hall. In 1961 a second addition was built. In 1971 the parsonage was torn down and the new building started. The first service was held on December 9, 1973. A dedication service was held on March 3, 1974. The cost of the new building was $270,000.

At this point in our journey, God has opened up a wonderful opportunity to expand our facilities yet again.  We hope soon to begin construction of a Youth and Family Ministry Building on property immediate to the south of our main parking lot, land that previously had been the location of a parsonage for one of our Associate Pastors.  When completed, it will provide a new and well-suited home to our teens ministries, and to other activities currently taking place in our current facilities.

Birthed in the midst of God's renewing work, Millington Baptist Church has consistently sought to glorify God by sharing the Good news and strengthening His people. We carry on today in the same spirit, dedicated to the same Savior, wanting to reach as many as possible with His redeeming grace.
